About Us

The Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform (M-MAP) is the first integrative platform for collecting, storing, and analyzing the genomic data of water, soil and rock environments. By augmenting traditional mining extraction and mine site remediation technologies with breakthrough biomining solutions, M-MAP will be the catalyst for new, environmentally sustainable mining practices in Canada, North America, and globally.

Microbiome analytics will enable state-of-the-art environmental practices across the mining lifecycle: a “green” approach to resource extraction and mine site remediation that promises to significantly reduce, and ultimately eliminate the use of toxic chemicals, develop more efficient mining practices, and greatly reduce the possibility of adverse environmental impacts. To that end, the consortium behind M-MAP includes global leaders in mining, genomic research, academic research, bioinformatics, synthetic biology, and applied earth sciences: Teck Resources, Rio Tinto, the Bradshaw Research Initiative for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM) at The University of British Columbia, BGC Engineering, Allonnia, Koonkie Canada, the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI), and Genome BC.

With funding support from Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster and consortium partners, M-MAP represents the largest investment in planned natural resource genomic bioinformatics in the history of the sector. Also supporting the project are Microsoft, genomic sequencing global leader Illumina, British Columbia’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.
